Nineteen-year-old Kimi Wabinaw's mother's crippling illness and her father's business trips make her responsible for caring for her nine-year-old sister, Aiyana. She suspects her father, Denny, is having an affair and is tired of being tied to a sick wife.
When her little sister, Aiyana, dies after falling into the pond behind their family home, Kimi suspects her father pushed her sister into the pond but wants it to look like an accident just so he can be rid of his family and be with his new woman. But she has no proof. She believes her neighbors, the Evangelistas, know something about her father's crime. Joe, on the other hand, is unconvinced that Kimi's father would do such a terrible thing.
Slowly, the ugly truth trickles out, dragging the neighbors and the small town of Pine Cove in northern Michigan into turmoil.
