How did Rosa Belle end up a prostitute?
Many people find themselves indebted to business associates, friends, or even predatory groups like the mafia or 'The Family'. Those groups flourished when prohibition spread over the United States. That is when they became more powerful, as the increase of profits from the sale of alcohol and prostitution went underground and widespread.
The people that deal in the illegal profits, found that immigrants were cheap and eager indebted labor to keep up with the demand. The immigrants become indentured servants. They were and are required to work for years to pay for their passage, though the bill is never paid off. The indentured servants are not slaves, slavery was outlawed. Indentured servants are still around and many will never really know freedom. This is a story about one woman that was owned by 'The Family'.
Sex, lies and deceit are parts of a prostitute's life during her working life. What happens when she wants more, or even out of the business? What happens when she falls in love with the wrong man? A green fan could have been the key to happiness or a memory that should be buried.
Her resourcefulness and creativity helped her to get out of prostitution and marry. Though, her life and name changed, her life would always be controlled by 'The Family' and old habits are hard to break. She realized, a memory or habit can be forgotten or revived with a flip of a fan.
