Jem Poulterer, an orphan and outcast, lives in the sleepy village of Denbry. Every night he dreams vividly of strange people and faraway places, a tall man with deadly powers and a beautiful brown-eyed woman, he's never met.

One day, the mysterious Lady Moranne visits, entertaining local children with tales of dragons. She makes Jem an offer he can't refuse, and together they set out on a journey to the capital, where reports suggest impending war from the north.

At Moranne's side, Jem embarks on a quest to stop the northern realm from allying with an ancient evil. They must journey through dangerous lands and face fearsome beasts as they try to recruit a special squad for their cause.

With every step, Jem learns more about Moranne and her strange powers. Is she his tutor, his saviour or his nemesis? He must find the truth about his past and visions before they reach the stone island and confront the darkness.
