Something strange is moving through the air in Baltimore. Close friends, Malcolm, Taj, and John cannot see or hear it but the old head, Sage feels it in his junkyard one night. He is reminded of old times, when he still had his other eye.

As Sage's favorite neighborhood children find ways to beat boredom in and out of school, that old invisible enemy reconnects with the city through a boy who has just moved in with his family. But adventures in candy sales, girls, and books are not enough to distract Malcolm, Taj and John from the thing that has arrived; the VOID.

Each boy begins to change, one more than the others. Watching them grow reminds Sage of the awesome men he has mentored in his many lifetimes and as summer comes to an end, a small group of new teens learn what Sage already knows. There is other worldly power in boyhood.
