A member of the outlaw biker gang Escape Artists has problems with the law. And, he has information about a cop's murder that might do him any good. Can't happen though without him talking to a former cop. He's hesitant. Cops and outlaw bikers, hmm... Outlaws don't talk to cops.
Ken retired from a big city police force and moved to the quiet, scenic Appalachians. He learns a former partner was murdered. That man's wife may be the do'er in this instance, but the clues are scarce. The former partner was shot dead only a few feet inside his home as he carried a gift just bought for his wife in his hands.
No problem with the murder motive - money always looks good. Ken needs to get close to that woman because it seems likely that no one can but him. The months grind on without many clues. Peculiarly an outlaw biker visits him at his shop in the Appalachians. He's one of those one-percenters, and it reads all over him. What does he want? What does he need? Cat, and mouse on a few lonely afternoons. Ken senses danger from this man, but he has a purpose that seems to persuade their conversations. When is his next visit? Ken prods on. He hopes to solve a murder.
