The Scorched Earth Murders

Eight decades in the future, planet Earth is burning under a hostile Sun. What still exists of human civilisation is spiralling out of control. The once fertile earth is dry and hard as iron, the only things that grow and thrive now do so in huge hydroponics units that cover the landscape of all the remaining pockets of human habitation on Earth. The cities have had to be rebuilt to produce buildings safe for humans to hide in during the murderous hours of daylight. The only none human creatures that still exist are imprisoned inside the artificial environments of zoos. The world has changed so much in eighty years that it would appear to be a completely different planet to the people of the past, no grass, no trees, no plants, no rivers, streams, ponds or any of the wildlife that would be associated with these 'natural' things.
But it's human society that those past humans would find the most alien. For every human that dies of age, illness or
accident, six others will be suicides or murder victims. The knowledge that an appalling death is only a few years away leads to a devaluing of human life in the eyes of many. Whole families walk out into the sunlight to die together. Cannibals, swirled in as much protective gear as they can be, drive round in the daytime hoping to beat the 'body vans' to the suicides and murder victims. The police and judiciary pretend they are keeping on top of lawlessness, they produce statistics that are far removed from reality. Many people have turned to the various religions or the hope that benign aliens are coming to rescue Earth. In some ways society is better, with over half the population declaring themselves to be L, G, B, T homophobia is a thing of the past, but sadly racism is not, with food in short supply, violent right-wingers will attack those that they don't think look 'British' enough to be sharing it with. The same things are happening all over the world, the borders of all remaining countries are firmly shut, there is no international cooperation with food distribution, and it's every country for itself.
Rob is a Detective Chief Inspector who, like many people, spends much of his time in a fantasy world, made possible by modern technology. But he has a family to look after, he has a partner and baby son that he loves desperately, even though he never meant to have either. Because of his family, he must keep working for the corrupt ruling elite he detests. Most people don't care about justice, democracy, or a fair society, they just want to have as much fun as possible in the time remaining to them. It's in this chaotic and violent society that Rob uncovers a secret that could change everything for him, his family, and the future of humanity.
