Mental Monsters is a collection of short stories related to mental illnesses, their symptoms, and getting help. The term "story" best describes each essay because this collection is a mix of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays, and prose. Each story stands alone and is purposely short, so even people who don't have a lot of spare time or have concentration difficulties can enjoy reading them. These stories range from lightheartedly encouraging to pensively dark, with many nuanced stages in between. Not every story is for every person, but the overarching purpose of Mental Monsters is to help people understand mental illness better. Goals:
1. To help people without mental illness understand how it feels to live with a chemically sick brain.
2. To remind those living with mental illness that they matter and are not alone. Trigger Warning: This book is intended for adults 18+ with recommended parental supervision for anyone younger. This book includes detailed descriptions of topics such as suicide, abuse, sexual assault, self-harm, disability-based discrimination, death and loss, mania, depression, addiction, anxiety, and other mental-illness related topics. It may be difficult to read this content, so I encourage you to only read what you're able to and to take care of your safety and well-being above all else. If you or someone you know may be struggling with suicidal thoughts, please call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 any time day or night. If you are in crisis, please call 911 or 988. Legal Disclaimer: The content of this book is for informational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition or disease. Please understand that this book is not intended as a substitute for proper diagnosis, treatment, or the provision of advice by an appropriate health professional. Organization: This collection is divided into Books A and B. Book A is comprised of 40 stories based on interviews I conducted with various people across seven different countries. Book B is a collection of 123 stories from my own brain.
