When David Randell dies in a car crash, Missy is shocked--and relieved. The bastard tried to kill her, and succeeded in killing their unborn child. She can't even regret the death of his mistress, who'd been in the car with him.

At the hospital, she meets Clay Feilding, the other woman's husband. Unlike her, he seems wracked with grief and Missy isn't sure how she feels about that. Jealous? Angry? Bitter? As fate draws them together, she works through her complicated emotions, and becomes genuinely fond of Clay's young son, Tim.

With events pushing and pulling at them, protecting the child from the increasingly sordid mess becomes her primary goal. She can't do it without Clay, but that means trusting him and she finds herself hesitating.
