The truth about the Wild West is explored in one Black man's life as he learns how the law applies to different people...and that he's on the losing side.

Twiggs Tater is a young Black boy when his family moves to Dodge City, Kansas, seeking freedom and a new beginning post-Civil War. Instead, they are forced to deal with prejudice yet again. When tragedy befalls them, Twiggs is left alone except for his prolific mentor.

After turning to rebellion, Twiggs decides to give up crime to be better-a choice that is rewarded with his swearing in as deputy marshal. In his new job, he gets embroiled in a murder case involving outlaws and deals with people who, like him, know that freedom is just an illusion. Can he straddle his worlds well enough to survive?
