This book is a collection of letters from my mother Julie Tilly Davidson covering the years from 1971 to 1998. Julie was born in 1918 in Canada and died in 1999. She led a quiet life as a housewife of an English tradesman and a mother of two boys. The letters explore her relationship with me, her older son, and her life in Toronto.
I always knew that my mother was situated somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum and had passed it on to me. This made us both happy, and definitely gave us a different world view. Perhaps that is why we understood each other so clearly. And possibly because of this, whenever I travelled far from home, my mother would write me to keep in touch. The contents of the letters include descriptions of her day-to-day activities and questions about my daily life. They are not challenging or complex, but are filled with the love of a mother for her son.
You never really know how much someone loves you. But when you find evidence of that love, even after many years, it is a sweet and wonderful thing. As the years passed, I did not realize how precious these letters would be to me. Two decades after my mother passed away, I began writing my memoirs. From her letters, I could add small details to the story, but the real value of the letters came when I assembled them all together. Rereading the letters, put my mother back at the family kitchen table again, sitting across from me. I could hear her and see her once again. One could ask for nothing more from those who have passed on, than to have an opportunity like that again.
