The Acts & the Actors: Beyond The Waiting

We are social beings by design. We all seek love, contact, and companionship to varied degrees. Some individuals crave company, who live off of conversation and attention, and those who would prefer not to be bothered with the mess. Because friendships are complicated, aren't they? Even the casual ones.
Why, you ask?
Because, curious reader, people are not simple animals, and neither is our world. It is true that Adam needed a partner in Eve, but much has changed since the account of Genesis. American society is oriented toward the individual. We are conditioned to battle for ourselves, to be strong-the rugged individual as Walt Whitman would describe it-but we are nevertheless supposed to make ourselves vulnerable, peel back our skin, and show our fragile dreams and gloomy anxieties. It grinds against what life has taught us.
