The Fine Art of Pretence

Pretence can be a double-edged sword of an art. It may be used for the right purpose as well as for selfish gain. There is much ado about pretence and deception as they can be said to be birds of the same plumage. The home truth is that pretence is within us all as humans, only in varying degrees as it is a monster which can be let loose or locked up depending on the individual.
The title of this book brought to mind the famous work of Sun Tzu, The Art of War. Employing pretence as a tool or a weapon (depending on the scenario) requires a terrain, an enemy, and varying strategies to use vis-?-vis time and events. Personally, I believe ambush to be the greatest of all strategies of pretence: the unsuspecting target is falls prey in a defenceless state.
There is, indeed, a thin line between pretence and gentlemanliness, as in the context of offering a seat to a lady even when one is tired. The gesture could only be fully interpreted by the person in question in his innermost mind as a gesture either out of altruism or to gain advantage-which, in this case, is to initiate a conversation with the lady involved.
Pretence isn't a bad attribute when put to use for the greater good. It is a formidable weapon to unearth the worst of pretenders. For instance, imagine a scenario where someone is lying to you to gain leverage and you just keep mute to enjoy their well-constructed ranting, only to hit them with the home truth after playing along for a while, leaving them dumbfounded-a classic example of timing and striking when the iron is red-hot.
Pretence and trust can be placed side by side as one can be used to fuel the other. Trust, though, is an expensive currency which is not easily earned but can be used as a joker or a last resort when performing an act of pretence but when pretence becomes the order of the day, trust becomes a devalued currency.
The truth be told, we all pretend. But before you begin to praise yourself and become all self-righteous, some self-examination will do with the following posers:

  • Do I act differently when I'm with my friends from when I'm with my parents?
  • What's my attitude in a religious place and at a social gathering?
  • Do I try to impress a guy or a lady I'm dating or just meeting?
  • How do I act in the midst of strangers?
Have you honed your use of pretence for a good cause or for deceit? Just before you put on that charade and earn yourself the moniker 'PRETENDER, ' be sure to be capable of striking a balance as there's a thin line between its attendant benefits (which can endear you to people as a fine artist) on the one hand, and the dark sides of the art (which can earn one the title of 'con artist') on the other.
