When Emcie finds herself on a mysterious island, she has one desire: to get back to her older brother Benoit, who's just been diagnosed with cancer. But the island is a more magical place than it first seemed. Populated entirely by teenagers, everyone, it seems, is hoping for something. People disappear at random-and, as Emcie soon learns, they then appear in other worlds, where they complete different challenges.

Desperate now to save her brother's life, Emcie travels through a fantastical China where astronomers bottle starlight, a desert world where nomads live in the eye of a sandstorm, an apocalyptic wasteland during WWII, a gas-giant science colony made of hot air balloons, and a private school for perfect children stationed on a cruise ship. Pursued by her secretive opponent Guanjun, Emcie fights her way through challenges and uncovers the truth about the island- and about her brother.
