This book examines the different periods of royal expansion and expansion during the reigns of successive emperors: Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Alamgir (known by his royal name Aurangzeb).
Each, while a prince, impatiently prepares to ascend to his father's throne, then escapes a bloody contest with his brothers and other male relatives to seize it. Each new emperor and his supporters later built on the institutions and methods of Akbar's long reign, which expanded and deepened the empire.
Each also developed its own unique culture and ideology. The first two emperors, in particular, preserved the empire's most extensive and sophisticated artistic and architectural achievements.
Each of these three successive governments attempted to conquer beyond the imperialist territorial boundaries, which seemed almost indefinitely expandable. Kabul remained a culturally important part of the empire.
Further, the native lands of Kandahar, Badakhshan, and Central Asia remained part of the Mughal dynasty's sense of self, but from time to time remained in its possession. Once conquered, Kashmir became part of an administratively indivisible (if geographically isolated) empire, and various military campaigns spread beyond it to Ladakh, almost to the border areas of China.
