A young veteran, a would-be artist, then an undergraduate student. No longer fitting back into normal life, the versographer had to find his own way out of the labyrinth of his inner life, to go back out into the larger world beyond. In the early 1980s, each effort at verse proved a next link in a slowly growing chain of continuity that has now stretched in length forty years. It seems in retrospect better in life to listen most to one's own heart, if one can make out its whispers and soft murmurs, than to continue to hear the noise of too many other people's empty voices.
