Are My Eyes Really Brown? is a family saga novel with a difference, and not just because it has more than its fair share of romance. Most novels about how the Ordinary Joe and Jill got their starts in life in the middle years of the twentieth century are set in London or the North of England, but this novel is located in the Deep South of the country during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath before its main characters eventually arrive in London to sample the dawn of the Swinging Sixties. There was an educational ladder in those days, and up it all the way into careers in the university world go the three of them, with the dangers of military service to be negotiated in between. The love lives of two of them benefit from their ruthlessness, but will the nice guy among them always be the one with a broken heart?
