The disappearance of the Roanoke colony remains one of the oldest unsolved mysteries in the United States. It all began back in 1587, when Sir Walter Raleigh financed the attempts of John White to establish a British colony on Roanoke Island, just off the coast of North Carolina. They landed that July and established themselves rather quickly. Everything seemed to be going well for the thriving colony of 115 people. In fact, John White's daughter, Eleanor Dare, gave birth to a daughter while in Roanoke. Virginia Dare became the first English child born in the Americas.
After some time past from their initial colonization, they completely vanished from the established settlement. The only evidence that was left behind was the word Croatoan (an Indian word) carved into a tree. Theories on the colony's disappearance ranged from Indians massacring them to Indians helping them.
What happened to them? Were they captured? Did the sail away back to England? Were they integrated into other tribes? These, and many more theories have floated around as time passed. However, there's one particular line of thought that is now widely understood as the most logical explanation behind their sudden evaporation.
