Twenty-eight-year-old Captain Hailey Russell sat patiently in the pilot's seat of her Huey warming up the engine as her crew readied themselves for yet another search and rescue. Resting her head on the back of the seat, she dared to close her eyes, knowing she would remember the tiger that killed a little boy right in front of her the previous year.

Violently hit by small arms fire as she took off, Captain Russell nursed her chopper away from the hostiles but eventually lost control and crashed. She and Corporal Bill Gurley, her obvious favorite, were the only survivors. Knowing the jungle almost as well as he did Captain Russell, Bill guided her to safety. But Corporal Gurley was soon discharged and went back to his father's ranch in Laramie, Wyoming.

Following the soldier she'd fallen in love with, Gurley relinquished her captain's bars and set out for Wyoming. But she brought more from Vietnam than she thought. The spirit of an old friend, a Shaman to his village, traveled with her in many ways, never leaving her mind or her side. While in Gurley's heart, he also proved to be a part of Bill's life in the gift of a tiger claw necklace around the soldier's neck. As the two former comrades in arms find a life of action and drama together, the unusual necklace would prove that that not all big cats are dangerous to all people...Sometimes they are a person's last and only hope.
