Venus of Appalachia

This is a feel-good family story of a toddler whose father suddenly became single and the toddler's nurturing grandma and grandpa formed a strong bond with the toddler as they welcomed her into their daily work and community events and gave her a sense of security, acceptance, and love and prepared her for the larger world. The story is set in the 1950s in a rural Appalachian farming village where close family and community ties gave reason to the hard, daily work on the farm and in the manufacturing plants during the post-WWII expansion.
