The story concerns the almost immediate obsolescence of the Army's new Chobham tank armour by the invention of a new type of anti-tank bullet by an East German scientist.
The British government offers the scientist sanctuary in the West if he defects and brings one of the bullets out with him.
Joint Defence Intelligence Staff operatives Keith Finlay and Patrick Canavan are sent to East Berlin to bring out the scientist and the bullet. In fact, Finlay has been ordered to kill the scientist and return with just the bullet.
Disaster at "the strip," the actual wired and mined border, leaves Canavan dead and Finlay wounded and captured. The British government denies knowledge of the operation and both men are given as dead.
Finlay, wounded in both legs, is taken to Moscow, where long term soft interrogation takes place. Dissatisfied with the progress of this interrogation, the KGB takes over.
Finlay is subjected to torture.

There follows in this book a remarkable account of punishment at the hands of the Russians. It is a sometimes touching but always sobering illustration of hope and determination in the face of great odds, at first glimpse seemingly desperate for a man with a broken mind, a mind suspended precariously in the jaws of fear and barely able to function.
Keith Finlay came back to tell his story - a trip few men have made-after a journey which was itself afflicted with the pain of death.
This novel is based on a true story and the result is a book which has a profound effect on all who read it.
When you put this volume down at its close, your satisfaction will be that you have shared in an experience, the knowledge of which must be important to all people with a conscience who wish to face the sometimes unsavoury truth about the real cost of democracy and freedom as we know it.

IT IS ESSENTIAL READING which confirms that rarely is it a question of right or wrong but more an obligation on our part to try and understand what drives men to incredible lengths for their country...
It has often been said that those who travel widely have on their return home an acute understanding of patriotism. This book takes you yet further on such a journey.
