Living on a 4000 acre ranch in the motherlode country of El Dorado County in California during the late 1950's and early 1960's was a dream come true. I prospected for gold, rode my horse every day, and explored the living museum surrounding me. I often discovered old gold mines and abandoned dwellings, plus the ghost images of lives already lived.
The land was wild and pristine with a beautiful lake. Wildlife was plentiful including rattlesnakes, raccoons, skunks, cougars, coyotes, bobcats, and wild goats. Over time, I came in contact with all of them.
Elsewhere in the world, some 3500 miles away from the Placerville ranch, a young sailor named Dave was enjoying his own experience running every kind of boat the Navy had to offer. He was living out his dream in a tropical setting and the landscape he explored was the boundless Pacific Ocean.
At times, Dave found himself in dangerous waters that tested his nautical skills and his calm resolve. Overcoming difficult situations taught him to be resilient, but he often longed for peace and a steady influence in his life.
Life-changing events can come to all of us, whether on a ranch in California or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and finding the courage to face the future is what's at stake.
For two young people living worlds apart, in distance as well as lifestyle, a chance meeting would be next to impossible. However, through pure happenstance and a bizarre situation, their two worlds collide.
