Alfredo Trani, a retired university professor of physics, suffers a heart attack while on a solitary walk in the woods. He is rescued by a stranger but ends up in a coma. While comatose he lives through an out-of-body experience that reveals an incorporeal reality he had never heard of and never even imagined. He struggles with its religious significance for a while, unable to forget what he lived through, and wondering whether he should share his experience with others. Eventually, given the religious overtones and the human message implicit in his story, he decides to tell his parish priest, Padre Antonio. Padre's initial reaction is to laugh it off but, as a favor to Alfredo, he records the story on tape, which is then transcribed on paper and shared with others, including Alfredo's religious wife Rosa. As the story is debated by influential people, Alfredo is encouraged to write it all down for eventual publication. Before he finishes writing it, however, he dies in obscure circumstances. His wife is devastated and asks Alfredo's best friend, Sergio, to see what he could do with Alfredo's unfinished manuscript.
