Mar?a Josefa was born under the protection of the palms, the flamboyant, and the beloved plant anacahuita. She watched the sunrises and sunsets of her hometown with the naivety of a sensitive child. That is why her verses have passion, love, and forgiveness, although her life circumstances wounded her deeply.

I feel the breaking glass
of my dreams
that mercilessly pierce
my stunned heart.
Imperturbable loneliness
commiserates with my luck
and stays by my side
trembling as I do.

She was always amazed as she looked at the blue waters of La Herradura Beach, Cuba, and listened to the song of the waves. Thus, the theme of the sea is present in all her work. In her poem "Fisherman's Daughter," the essence of her seafaring soul is revealed. We can see it in the following verses.

High tide, conch, net,
foam, low tide,
sand, fish, corals,
breeze hitting in the window.
Everything is alive poetry
that speaks to me from the beach.

She comes from a magical city, Holguin, where the glow of Loma de la Cruz illuminated her birth. But she spent most of her life in the town of Velasco, which, being near the sea, still smiles at the sun. Her poems reflect the romanticism of Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda, so I can honestly say: Thank you, Maria, for allowing me and others to peek into your world of tenderness.
