Liverpool teenager Gareth gets a Saturday job at his local eight till late shop. One night he witnesses the murder of the shop keeper and identifies the killer to the Police. After the killer escapes custody, Gareth and his family go to stay with his Aunt in Corwen, North Wales. Gareth explores an old railway tunnel and discovers a passageway to a house on the hill top where he frees a prisoner. The prisoner turns out to be the kidnapped President of the USA who is to be executed that evening. Along the way the diaries of the railway engineer who built the tunnel and passageway are discovered. They show that he discovered an underground cavern whilst building the tunnel, but bricked it up without saying anything to the authorities rather than risk any delay to the building of the railway. Unknown to him at the time, the cavern was part of King Arthurs fort and houses the remnants of the round table and the Holy Grail. Early in the book the tale of the discovery of the Holy Grail by Sir Galahad and it's safe return to the Hill Fort at Corwen by his Squire Tom, is told. In case you are wondering, King Arthur was the leader of the ancient Britons in the area now known as Wales. The story was 'moved' from Wales to Cornwall centuries ago.
