Alinta is a large village in the Slave Coast, a vast region on the west coast of Africa where millions of slaves fed the Transatlantic slave trade for 350 years. Obi is among the local slave raiders who profits from the trade. He seizes Alinta and turns it into a base for his activities. His brutality consists of plunder, rape, large scale seizures of people, kidnapping, and fighting off the natives of Alinta who want their territory back. Then British colonialism and Christianity come to the land, setting up an inevitable clash. The new order brooks no destabilizing activities which the slave trade causes, and the Christians want to win souls for Christ. Converted freed slaves are significant players in the outcome.
