A reader who picks this up and reads especially the commentary is going to walk away, not forgetting what he's read like an image in a mirror, but with a better understanding of what James is about. The translation, even with its several infelicities (Jacob for James, two souled, hollow man), is still fairly accurate, and those very differences from standard translations may well serve to stimulate thinking about the text and comparison with other translations. My main criticism is that, in attempting to do a little bit of everything, his commentary does nothing as well as it could have been done. It really needed to be a much larger work and to include a great deal more information and detail. I feel almost that this should have been a sort of free-form outline for a real commentary, rather than the completed commentary. Various features could have been included as well for an electronic edition.
