Alexandr Petrov much prefers to be called 'Sasha'. He prefers the army over farming. He prefers his mother over his father. He prefers tanks over guns. He dreams far too big for being a mutt, is far too ambitious for a Yakut, and wants nothing more than to be a General in the Red Army and have ultimate power. One particular preference of Sasha's will prove very problematic, however, when the second great war starts: he prefers men over women. And when the Germans send over 'helpers', Sasha seals his fate by falling head over heels for one of them, thereby willfully ignoring the greatest mandate of his country; 'there are no homosexuals in the Soviet Union'. Sasha is nothing if not determined, and is confident that he is mightier than the Union.

A few lessons Sasha missed: the world doesn't care about love, people can change, hate is stronger than affection, and war brings out the worst in even the best people. And, on all corners of the Earth, no land is more unforgiving to a man than Siberia.

On top of everything else, Sasha's worst enemy could very well be the man he loves.
