Marriage is the first institution created by God in the Garden of Eden. In the book of Genesis chapter 1 verse 26, God created MAN in His own image.
"Then God said; let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." In verse 27,
"God created mankind in His image...." But in Chapter 2 verse 18
,"....and the Lord God said it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet". Furthermore, in the same book of Genesis chapter 2 verses 24, God categorically said
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh." From the above bible quotations, it is clear and so glaring that God Himself started the institution called marriage. He also established the first couple, ADAM and EVE in the Garden of Eden.
- Marriage is also the union of two people, to the exclusion of all others (English dictionary version 5.0.1).
- It is a union of two people that creates a family tie and carries legal, social and or religious rights and responsibilities.
- It is the union of two people of opposite sex.
In my own peculiar way, I will like to describe marriage as
a place for two managers, an investment imitative, and a contact point of two strangers (one person in two separate bodies, living separately for so long) who choose to risk the journey of a lifetime together.
There are many questions running through my mind each time I think about marriage.
- Why do we have so many failed marriages?
- What happened to the LOVE that once brought couples together?
- What happened to the assurance and certainty of togetherness?
- What makes the assurance disappear so easily?
- Why do couples have to suffer and endure each other in marriage?
- Is marriage not supposed to be enjoyed blissfully and peacefully?
- What can possibly be done to ease the pains in marriage?
- Why do some marriages end in tragedy?
- Why is divorce rate so alarming?
- How can we possibly reduce the rate of divorce in our society?
All these questions and many more do ring in my mind at all times and I have realized that the battle against successful marriage cuts across religions. Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Believes among others have their own challenges in marriage. Crises are not also exclusive to ethnicity, race, skin colour, age, educational attainment or financial status as far as marriage is concerned.
One day, after I listened to a troubled woman about her struggles and pains in her marriage -I was inspired through the counsel I shared with her to prayerfully search for possible solution to reduce divorce in our society. And, perhaps, help to improve upon marital relationship.
