Once a wealthy man in Mangondit cattle camp, Maborakur is revered because of his strength and generosity. However, as soon as his father retires to his hut and hands over his kraals to him, he is forced into the army by Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLA). Upon his return, six years or so later, he finds that he has lost everything; his wealth has been taken over by his kinsmen and his house and his family are scattered. Out of distress, he takes to drinking. His attempts to bring his family together lead him to jail and ultimately to his grave.
