Stubblefield's investigation leads to powerful forces which are willing to kill to achieve government contracts during the Reconstruction Era. As his investigation continues, he discovers that no one can be trusted in the deceitful atmosphere of the nation's capital.

Attempts are made on Stubblefield's life, and he luckily survives each effort. As he comes closer to discovering those who are responsible for the murders, he suspects the people who sent for him are involved.

When Stubblefield gets too close to the truth, the dark forces working behind the scenes force him to leave D.C. The results of his investigation lead to unlikely culprits and a complex and surprising ending.
