Private Detective West Barns has his flight diverted from where he had hoped to holiday in Krakow, and finds himself falsely arrested for Drug smuggling, by Captain Sowa whose intentions are to have him imprisoned until he can find the enormous fine to meet his release. En route to prison West finds himself rescued by an anti-government group who mistake him for someone else. Realising their mistake, their leader Mark together with Zofia and her boyfriend Serge attempt to take him back across the Polish border, now more difficult than ever without his passport. The attempt fails and one of their number is killed. After a second attempt also fails West is convinced that he has been betrayed. But why should the group wish to help him at all, as he is plainly persona non grata, or is he. And why do they wish to have him at their council? Is it to decide his fate? Or is he being used for a different reason? This he is to find out when the village where the groups are holding council, is attack by government soldiers, and Jan a shepherd boy agrees to help him to reach Poland by taking him over the mountains. Then when in sight of his destination he is at last confronted by his betrayer and the reason behind it all.
