Bradford relates stories in Ungrateful Citizen of his journey in the U.S. Marine Corps and the pride he felt wearing his uniform to protect America. He also brings light to the racial inequities and incidents that occurred during his tours and how the Marines worked to eradicate these issues. He touches upon today's racial problems in cities across the United States and the current fragile relationship between the police and people of different ethnicities. Bradford tells readers that although there are many issues left to be resolved, this is a country of so much promise and hope for everyone.
