Helater studied (as an autodidact) and wrote poetry in the City by the Bay, transmogrifying into a post-Beatnik-post-Hippie-nouveau Bohemian.A short time later, Hally packed his rucksack and headed off for Madrid for a six-month sojourn. After his return from Spain and a brief visit home, he moved to San Diego; then quickly proceeded on south of the R?o Bravo (Rio Grande) to Cuernavaca, Morelos and on to Mexico City, where he worked and studied for two years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In late 1980, Thomas and Guadalupe Hally moved to San Francisco after an extended honeymoon in England and in France, where they had studied at the Alliance Fran?aise and the Sorbonne.
