Darcy's Elusive Bride: Pride & Prejudice Variation

Darcy pursues Elizabeth, who flees malicious rumors about a stormy night alone with Darcy, in order to protect Georgiana's betrothal. He gave her up once, he will not let another misunderstanding keep him from wedding the woman he has always loved.

Elizabeth, unaware of the depth of Darcy's regard, feels her only options are to wed a shopkeeper, or take a position as a companion. Heartbroken, she makes the practical choice.
