Fanny is engaged to a young doctor who leaves for the Front during WW1. He is killed but has left Fanny expecting his child. Her father banishes her to Scotland until the baby is born and adopted. After a few years she and her sister find themselves living in North Wales and going on a mid-summer day's walk over the hills with most of the people in the small town. What happens during that walk decides the eternal destiny of both sisters. Although the walk apparently only lasts for a day it actually covers the rest of their lives.
