This memoir is a short read covering a long life, starting from an early childhood memory, datable to 1945, and ending with the closing years of my 50 year career as a professor of Chinese at New York University. Along the way I touch on a few highlights: glimpses of my academic work - teaching and research, how I navigated the perils and prejudices of graduate school, and lastly my reflections on politics - how I came to think outside the rather small groupthink box that confines so many academics, journalists, and government officials when it comes to China and Asia.
