PROGRAM NOTES: I certainly should think that I was mad, absolutely mad, if I were not conscious that I knew my state, if I could not fathom it and analyze it with the most complete lucidity. I should, in fact, be a reasonable man laboring under a hallucination.
These phrases taken from The Horla by Guy de Maupassant (1887) reveal a rare insight that the man affected by madness has toward his own existence. It is by recognizing how important this exclusive apprehending of our reality is - even through judged erroneous by most - that the French philosopher Michel Foucault wrote in History of Madness that from man to true man, the path passes by the madman.
As I tried to imagine a musical context able to support a (reduced) version of Maupassant's text, it is the sensibility of the narrator toward his existence that I wished to represent foremost. The first sung sentence Is it a cold shiver that has darkened my soul? while not at the beginning of the original text, has been chosen as starting point for that reason. The musical work proceeds onward from lucidity until "toxic" madness through different intermediary states that correspond to the sections of the text [melancholia, hyper-cerebral activity, paranoia, schizophrenia].As for the voice, each section brings forth a different type of relationship between the mezzo-soprano and the electronic setup. By itself the electronics represent the internal psychological world of the narrator.

NOTES DE PROGRAMME
Certes je me croirais fou, absolument fou, si je n'?tais conscient, si je ne connaissais parfaitement mon ?tat, si je ne le sondais en l'analysant avec une compl?te lucidit?. Je ne serais donc, en somme, qu'un hallucin? raisonnant. Ces phrases issues du texte Le Horla de Guy de Maupassant (1887) d?voilent un rapport privil?gi? que l'homme atteint de la folie entretient avec sa propre existence. C'est en reconnaissant l'importance de cette perception unique de notre r?alit?, souvent et pr?matur?ment jug?e fourbe, que le philosophe fran?ais Michel Foucault ?crivit dans l'Histoire de la folie ? l'?ge classique que de l'homme ? l'homme vrai, le chemin passe par l'homme fou .
Lorsqu'il a ?t? question d'imaginer un contexte musical pouvant soutenir une version (r?duite) du texte de Maupassant, c'est avant tout la sensibilit? dont fait part le narrateur envers son existence que j'ai voulu d?peindre. La premi?re phrase chant?e Est-ce un frisson de froid qui assombrit mon ?me ? a ?t? choisie comme point de d?part pour cette raison. Des ?l?ments descriptifs, par exemple: Un long convoi de navires... r?lait de peine en vomissant une fum?e ?paisse..., sont pr?sents dans la trame ?lectroacoustique et instrumentale. Ils sont accompagn?s d'autres ?l?ments ?voqu?s ou sous-entendus, par exemple les vagues, repr?sent?es musicalement et omnipr?sentes du d?but ? la fin de l'oeuvre. En ?laborant ce principe j'ai t?ch? d'accompagner les phrases chant?es d'une structure sonore puisant dans les richesses d'ordre litt?raire, s?mantique et psychologique sugg?r?es par le texte.
Chaque sc?ne fait appel ? un rapport diff?rent entre la mezzo-soprano et le dispositif ?lectronique. L'?lectronique ? lui seul repr?sente le monde psychologique du narrateur.
