Following Christ in Believer's Baptism

As Jesus began his ministry, he personally sought out his disciples and challenged each one individually to follow him. That call to obedience still extends to every believer who desires to follow Christ today. No matter the details of our past, from the moment we meet Jesus our future is forever changed because of our walk with the Lord. God has given all his people a unifying action that demonstrates and memorializes the miracle that God has worked in the lives of all who trust in Jesus as their Lord. Scripture tells us the first step on our life journey of discipleship takes us through the waters of baptism. There is a great deal of confusion, religious fuss and supposition that obscures the hope and promises that are metaphorically pictured when an individual submits to the Lord's command to follow him in baptism. It might be enough to say that believer's baptism is an outward demonstration of an inwardly obedient heart submitting to the will of God. But there are so many of God's promises demonstrated through the act of water baptism. Baptism serves as a unifier of all of God's people as it depicts being led by faith to live in the land of victorious Christian living, a life made possible only because of God's miraculous divine deliverance. As we walk through the baptismal waters each believer also personally experiences a demonstration of God's promise of eternal salvation from judgement and the hope of a new beginning because of obedience. The embracing and covering waters not only gives assurance of God's ability to hold his children, but portrays the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit to live within and change a person's life.New believers who learn to see and understand the promises and scriptural truths of baptism will be blessed by the hope and assurance that is demonstrated by this simple act of obedience to Christ's command. Christian discipleship that has begun in obedience will be marked by spiritual joy and assurance of a new life. A Christian walk that has begun through an act of faith will continue through fellowship with the one who has the power to transform the failures of our past into the victorious hope of a new and glorious tomorrow.
