Dr. Haughton wrote his dissertation on the American family to earn a Doctor of Ministry degree. He contrasted the modern view of marriage of our society with the biblical information on what makes a family Christian. Most people think they know what marriage is about, but if they are willing to analyze its parts, as Dr. Haughton did, they learn otherwise. He sets forth the principles that are essential to establishing a Christian marriage. For 15 years he taught the marriage and family course at a Christian college in Memphis. He also spoke widely at church retreats on family issues. At the same time he was serving on the staff of a mid-size evangelical church as a family counselor. He held six premarital counseling sessions with each couple before their wedding. After church ministry he served as a family therapist on a psych unit in a large hospital in Memphis. Couples about to marry can benefit by reading this book, as well as couples who have been married twenty or thirty years. Dr. Haughton has uncommon wisdom on this subject that he and his wife, Jo Ann, have worked out over 55 years of marriage. They have two adult sons and two grandchildren.
