Katie: The Life of Countess Cowper

This is the story of a woman born in the nineteenth century who lived a life of great privilege but also of responsibility. Although she became, by marriage, Countess Cowper, and was married to one of the wealthiest men in England, she retained a loving, creative and thoughtful nature and, despite being constrained by the mores of her time, developed into an articulate and forceful woman in her own right. I have attempted through an examination of letters, her scrapbook and travel journals, plus the Memoir she wrote of her husband, to find the woman behind the hostess who presided over glittering parties of guests, comprising royalty, politicians and artists. As wife to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland at a time when she and her husband narrowly missed political assassination, I found that this side of her story, examined mainly through letters sent by her husband and annotated by her during their time in Ireland, was worth examining as well.
