In this sequel to The Price of Success, finally forced by his senior staff to go on a recuperative holiday, Steve Quinn and Ann set off on an RV adventure to Inuvik, in the Canadian High Arctic. This holiday is to complete Steve's recovery, and help decide Ann if they really can be a long term couple. Steve's absence will allow his business staff to complete the massive integration of newly purchased companies that Steve engineered before his ex-wife shot him. In Saskatoon, Steve's fey sense leads him to discover and acquire a fantastic prize. In Dawson Creek they encounter some old friends and persuade them to accompany them on the way north. On the slow journey north up the Alcan and Dempster Highway's they encounter marvellous scenery, wild life, and Ann learns much more from Steve's friends about Steve's early life. Including several near fatal racing accidents. In Inuvik they meet up with Steve's extended family, but Ann, recognizing that she can't cope with Steve or the Arctic's wide open spaces, leaves to fly back home to Regina. This leads to Steve traveling alone and deciding to visit Yellowknife on the return trip. On a lonely back road he gets caught in an early winter blizzard, and with an RV that breaks down, barely survives the snow and cold. When he finally staggers into Yellowknife, in critical condition, it's decision time for Steve's future.
