At the time of publication the world is at war with a microscopic virus that has instilled global fear and brought the world's economy to its knees. Our leaders have assured us that no effort will be spared, no stone unturned and no financial barrier will prevent all of us all from overcoming humanity's greatest challenge in living memory. This virus respects no borders, no social class, no gender or age. The world has learned that we are all in this together, we are all the same. There is another pandemic the world has been dealing with for all of that living memory. It too shows no respect for borders, class, gender or age yet the same concern or resources are not deployed. People, for the most part, are left to fight it alone with little community backing and no universal funding. It's a pandemic which has claimed the lives of millions and will continue to do so in numbers which will dwarf the eventual toll of the current virus. That pandemic is called Cancer but it seems, we are not all in it together, we are all different. Why is that? This is the story of my cancer journey through a first world health system that helped heal my body while damaging my mental health and self esteem for the sake of a small shortfall of financial resources that I was unable to provide. When this current emergency passes and the world returns to normal, I hope we can bring the same help and concern to all cancer patients and truly say, "we are all in this together".
