What can the eccentric Professor Theo have found in his studies of artists and their works--something that eludes the grasp of mathematical logic and super computers--that threatens the Lunar colony's grand project of creating an inhabitable cyber-world? How can he alter the course of events by being a guinea pig in a prototype of that project? And why risk his life in the process, choosing to go barefoot in the Sierra Nevada, circa 1900, as one of the last of a doomed Indian tribe? It all seems crazy to J. (don't call her Julia) Morkan, an increasingly marginalized humanities person in a hyper-tech society, who ends up his attendant in the nearly deserted outpost dome. She'd like to believe and help him, (used to be a sucker for rebels and lost causes-used to be), but he blames her for the dissolution of his artiste colony, and hasn't revealed his intentions. All she has to go on his last lecture. What she discovers in the tape of that lecture and in subsequent events, suggests a surprising alternative future, as well as, for her, a measure of personal redemption.
