Missing YearsThe Gospel of Luke explains that when Jesus was twelve he made an impressive display of Torah knowledge and wisdom before the temple priests at Passover. He then returned to Nazareth with his parents, "subject unto them." The Gospel of Luke then makes the statement: Luke 2:52 "And Jesus increased in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and man." The next mention of him is at the age of thirty when he is baptized by John in the Jordan River. What happened to him between the ages of 12 to 30? Conventional Christianity has concluded that he was a carpenter during those Missing Years, but in the four gospels, approved by the church, he is not described as a carpenter. Young Jewish boys of the first century were taught to read and write up until their bar mitzvah at the age of 13. The ones that excelled in school continued their education while the other learned their father's trade. Jesus was a scholar and thus continued on a scholastic path which would have ultimately resulted in him becoming a priest or a scribe. So why such an 18-year historical silence? Jesus came back on the scene in Israel as a mature adult. An adult that was an inspirational, gifted spiritual leader. Jesus, the self acclaimed, Son of God, having taken on a human form, must have followed his own unique life's road. He disappeared from the scriptures as a 12 year old boy.
