In Scotland in the year 1745, a young highlander has forseen seen an elegant stranger disembarking on an unknown shoreline. Soon, rumours spread among his clan that The Prince has landed and a new rebellion is about to begin. His family continue to work on the croft and prepare themselves for the winter ahead, but when the tacksman rides through the glen with the fiery cross he demands a rent payment far greater than a share of their crops. In the year 2146 the human race has become nocturnal and is learning to cope with the effects of global warming and a thinning atmosphere. In New Zealand, a disillusioned teacher is visited by a spirit from the past. He is given a message in an ancient tongue that he does not understand. After seeking help from colleagues, he discovers that he cannot ignore the spirit and embarks on a voyage to Scotland.A patient is released having been treated for many years for a terrible crime he committed as a child. During his incarceration he has successfully hidden his instability from those treating, and ultimately releasing him. Now he is driven by a voice to make the journey to Culloden, where he has been promised a great reward. The teacher and the madman take their positions against each other in a final battle to decide the destiny of the souls of the past.
