Ferguson Race Riots

The Ferguson riots will be remembered as a flashpoint in American history that became the catalyst of a renewed civil rights movement in the 21st century. African Americans have experienced generations of persecution by a white power structure which seems determined to separate the races and relegate minorities to a second class existence. The implications of these actions are being felt today, in Ferguson, and elsewhere around America. The seeds of inter-racial conflict, sewn over a century ago, germinated with the police shooting of Michael Brown, in the small St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri on August 9th, 2014. The Ferguson protests galvanized support among minorities, as well as many Caucasians, to form a new civil rights movement, to finally ensure liberty, justice and freedom for all Americans, as promised by the founders of the United States, so incidents like the Ferguson riots don't occur in the future.Race-based tensions in the United States have been smoldering for many years. The civil rights movement, which began in the 1950's, largely died with the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960's. Although some progress has been made in civil and racial rights since King's passing, the movement has stalled. The backlash against perceived white injustice in Ferguson, Missouri may mark the beginning of a new round of racial strife in the United States. Civil wars are often initiated over racial, economic or religious issues. America's own civil war was fought over a complex combination of issues including cultural differences, an industrial vs. an agrarian economy, state rights vs. federal rights, and the question of whether or not to allow the expansion of slavery into new territories. Riots such as the ones that the Ferguson police provoked could lead to a modern age civil war if quick action is not taken to quell the racial intolerance in the United States. The death of Michael Brown provoked a long-overdue conversation about excessive police force, racial discrimination and the injustices of the U.S. justice system. America is at a breaking point. Ferguson was the first sign of upheaval in the modern age of race relations in America. If quick action is not taken to mend the relations between the races, the country may descend into chaos, which could lead to larger and more violent riots throughout the United States and possibly another civil war over the inequalities in America, both race-based and economically driven. Ferguson should be an urgent wake-up call, to promote peace, and protect the civil rights of all Americans-to forestall a civil war in America, and to live up to the Democratic ideals that American politicians attempt to propagate around the world.
