Tilly and her friends, Molly and Tom, think history is boring. In Tilly's words, many history books are all "This guy did this, then that, and President So-and-so said that."

In the "Unboring History of the B&O Railroad", the children board an Amtrak train for a vacation in Washington DC, and within minutes are whisked onto the trains of the old B&O Railroad. The books are "written by" Tilly. She happens to be African American, but that is not important until she experiences things like being asked to leave a 1920s rail dining car.
