In the Fall of 1961, Maryna discovers a pile of letters in her mother's bedroom dresser. The envelopes are unusual, fashioned from the kind of high-quality paper that is a rarity in their town of Rostov, in the Soviet Union. All are addressed to "Gregory", a man her mother has told them is an uncle, but who Maryna and her younger sister Nina have never met.

Twenty years earlier, Maryna's father, Vladimir, was brutally killed by the KGB. Rumors flew thick and fast around his death, but her mother always maintained his innocence.
