The world has been presented with a false dilemma: either to accept a very large number of deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic, or a deep economic recession almost without precedent resulting from general lockdowns. In this book we show that for most countries there were more effective, and less costly responses to the crisis than the ones chosen. According to our approximate estimates, had the world followed these policies eight out of every ten deaths could have been saved, and the economic cost of the pandemic could have been around one fourth lower. Based on these lessons, we derive specific policies that can, and should be implemented today and in the future.Carlos Obregon has a Ph.D. in economics from Colorado University.
