In May 1838, federal troops and state militia units, supervised by General Winfield Scott, rounded up the Cherokee, who refused to accept the Indian Removal Act, and forced them to make a one-thousand-mile journey across America, to a reservation in Oklahoma. This heroic journey is known as 'The Trail of Tears.
